Many veterans do not receive VA Pension as they believe they are already receiving Pension and do not apply, as they think that Pension is the same benefit as military retirement. They are rather two distinct programs. Military retirement is paid to those who either served on active duty for a period of years, or reached retirement age in the reserves.
VA pension is a different benefit; it pays monthly tax-free cash to veterans and their surviving spouses to pay for the cost of long term care. It can be used to cover costs a wide range of long term care, including assisted living, independent living, at home care, and nursing home care.
It is possible to receive both military retirement and VA Pension at the same. Veterans and their surviving spouses are encouraged to seek the assistance of an experienced elder law attorney if they have a need for long term care.
